USASF’s Early Changes for 2025-2026: “Flex” Divisions & New Rules

Last year, we reported on the USASF’s (United States All Star Federation) proposal to introduce “flex” divisions as a way to expand participation opportunities and accommodate teams with diverse age ranges. Now, those ideas have come to life—at least for the 2025-2026 season.

The USASF has now officially introduced Youth Flex and Junior Flex divisions, along with a few updates to routine guidelines and rules. These changes aim to make All Star Cheer more inclusive and adaptable, particularly for smaller programs or those in smaller communities.

Note: These updates are part of an early release, so they may change as the season gets closer. We’ll keep you informed about any updates—be sure to subscribe to our newsletter to stay updated with all the latest cheerleading news!

What’s new?

1. Introduction of Flex Divisions*

USASF has introduced new “flex” divisions, allowing a wider age range of athletes on the same team. These new divisions are:

  • Youth Flex (Levels 1–3): For athletes born between 2012 and 2020 (6-13 years old).
  • Junior Flex (Levels 1–4): For athletes born between 2009 and 2019 (7-16 years old).

These divisions are alternatives for gyms that may not have enough athletes to form teams in standard age groups. Similar divisions are already offered by some event producers.

*Important: These divisions are provisional, meaning USASF will evaluate them at the end of the season to decide if they’ll continue in future years.

2. Combining CheerABILITIES Unified Divisions

USASF has merged the Youth, Junior, and Open Unified divisions into a single Unified division for athletes aged 12 and older. This change simplifies divisions and aligns better with international standards!

3. Updates to Routines & Performance

There are also a few changes to routine and performance rules:

  • Choreography: The “appropriate choreography” section has been updated to limit references to gun violence.
  • Props: Props will no longer need to be submitted for approval before competing.
  • Stunts: Stunts in CheerABILITIES Exhibition and Unified divisions, will be restricted to prep level only.

To view the updated performance rules, see the official USASF Rules document.
