cheerleading rules how to see if a skill is legal or illegal

Cheerleading rules can sometimes be confusing and difficult to understand, no matter what level you are coaching or how long you have been a coach. However, there is a very simple way to get clarity on whether a skill is legal or illegal!

By following these steps, you can send videos of your cheerleading skills directly to the US All Star Federation (USASF) or the International All Star Federation (IASF) and receive a response along with an explanation of why the skill is legal or illegal.

Here’s how to do it:

Please note that the information provided here is for reference purposes only and may not be official or up-to-date. For accurate and official guidelines, we recommend visiting the USASF website directly. You can find the guidelines and reminders on the official USASF page by clicking here.

For Non-US Coaches (International Coaches)

If you are a coach based outside the United States, follow these steps to have your cheerleading skill video reviewed:

1. Read the guidelines

To access the guidelines and reminders provided by the USASF, click here. Take the time to read through them carefully (!) as it is crucial to understand the instructions properly.

Paying attention to the details is essential because if you fail to follow the guidelines correctly, there is a possibility that your video may not be evaluated.

2. Record your video

Again, make sure you are following the guidelines. Record a video of either one stunt group or one individual athlete performing the skill in question.

3. Write your email

Write an email to the International All Star Federation (IASF) using the email address [email protected]. Include the video along with the team and gym name, country, division, and level. Providing all the necessary information will help the IASF accurately assess the skill.

4. Wait!

Once you have sent the email, patiently await a response from the IASF. They will review your video (allow 10-14 days for a response, depending on the volume of videos being sent) and provide a clear answer on whether the skill is “LEGAL” or “ILLEGAL.” If the skill is considered illegal, they will also offer an explanation as to why it is considered illegal.

This information will be valuable in helping you understand what changes or adjustments are needed to comply with the rules.

Bonus tip!

For US Coaches (USASF Coaches):

If you are a coach based in the United States, who is a member of the US All Star Federation (USASF), you can follow these steps to have your cheerleading skill video reviewed:

1. Download the USASF Coach app

Visit the App Store or Google Play Store, search for “USASF COACH”, and download the app on your mobile device.

Log in using your usasfmembers.net username and password.

2. Record or select a video

First, open the app’s menu & click “Submit Video”. Select your location, then click on the camera icon at the bottom.

You’ll be prompted to either record a video directly in the app or select one from your camera roll. After that, you’ll go through the steps of selecting the type of cheerleading, level, division, and more.

Make sure you are following the guidelines provided by the USASF!

3. Await the response

In the app (on the “Submit Video” page), you’ll find all of your pending videos, legal videos, and illegal videos. Just like we explained above for international coaches, video reviews can take 10-14 days, depending on the volume of videos being sent.

See the official USASF app instructions here:

By following these steps, both non-US and US cheer coaches can easily determine the legality of their team’s skills. This knowledge will help ensure that your team performs within the rules and regulations of your level, avoiding unnecessary deductions!
